Sober Soul Peace Sunday | Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
For 30 years, I struggled with what I call the alcohol monster voice and devil juice.
For 50 years, I lived with an eating disorder voice.
I know what it’s like to keep reaching for something more while hurting inside.
More booze. More food. More things. More dating. More distractions.
For a long time, I thought the question was, “Why can’t I stop?”
Now I ask, “What pain am I trying to soothe?”
If you’re suffering and you don’t know why, sweet Soul, I want you to hear this: you are not alone. You deserve someone who will listen without judgment.
During Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, I’m thinking about the silent observers. The people reading quietly. The people who seem to be managing on the outside while trying to make it through another day.
I see you. 💜
Today I’m sharing a video from Pema that has helped me find peace. I hope it gives you a moment to pause and breathe, too. Thank you, Pema. 🙏
What if I stopped chasing more?
I used to reach for something outside myself when I didn’t know how to sit with what was happening inside me. Silence and stillness could feel uncomfortable. It left room for the hurt I had been trying so hard to outrun.
We can’t outrun trauma. I tried.
My Buddhist practice has helped me approach that silence differently.
Non-attachment, as I practice it, means noticing when I’m gripping something and gently asking whether it’s bringing me peace.
I walk away from anything that doesn’t help my Soul & cells grow.
I can enjoy life without asking when is the next drink, meal, purchase or relationship to heal a wound it cannot reach.
I’m learning to fall in love with moments of silence.
With Stillness in motion.
With a breath.
With water.
With sleep.
With a walk outside.
With enough.
That doesn’t mean anyone should have to go without food, safety, shelter or care. Those are needs, not cravings.
We live in an overfed malnourished society.
It means I can question the voice that insists I must always have more before I’m allowed to feel at peace.
As within, so without
“Heal our addiction to more. Choose loving living with less.
When we care for our leaky Soul we can care for Mother Earth’s leaky soil, too.”
— Dee | Momma Lovey Peace
I see a connection between the ways we try to fill an ache inside and the things we consume and discard outside. When we reach for more to soothe ourselves, those choices can affect our energy, our homes and Mother Earth’s soil.
Before the next “more,” I’m learning to pause and ask what I actually need.
Do I need rest? Food? Water? A walk? A cry? Sleep? Someone safe to talk to?
Love your liver.
Leave the liquor and sugar.
I call alcohol devil juice because of what it took from my life and my energy.
I know how loud that voice can be.
I also know that shame never gave me the care I was searching for.
Mothering the unmothered
Your inner child is waiting for you to show up with the care you deserved all along.
Many of us who weren’t mothered in the ways we needed never learned how to soothe ourselves as adults. We learned how to survive.
Mothering the unmothered, to me, means meeting that younger part of ourselves with patience, protection, grace and loving kindness.
Sometimes I imagine sitting beside my little Soul in silence instead of rushing to distract her.
I don’t have to fix everything in that moment. I can begin by staying.
No blame. No shame.
When we know better, we can choose differently.
We can ask for help. We can practise a new way to self-soothe.
We can loosen our grip on “more” and make room for inner peace.
We can be part of the solution instead of the pollution, for peace on Earth.
We are all connected, sweet Soul.
We are the medicine. And none of us has to do this alone. 💜🌱
