Words Hurt or Heal Wednesday 💜
Every word that leaves your mouth passes through your own Soul and cells first.
That thought has been sitting with me.
At Dee’s Dharma, we don’t swear and we don’t use mental health terms as everyday adjectives because it is not mental. It is environmental. It is a fried nervous system and a leaking microbiome /gut.
“I’m so OCD.”
“That’s crazy.”
“That’s insane.”
Words matter.
Not because we need to become perfect speakers or police every word that comes out of our mouths, but because language carries meaning, emotion and intention — and our bodies are constantly responding to the environment we create around them.
When we casually use clinical terms as insults or exaggerations, we can trivialize deeply complex conditions.
But there is another reason I care about our words:
What we repeatedly say can shape the environment we live in — including the environment inside our own bodies.
The Science Behind Harsh Words
When we experience anger, threat or chronic stress, the brain and nervous system can activate the body’s stress response.
Repeated or prolonged stress activation can influence cortisol, inflammatory signalling, sleep, digestion, immune function and the body’s ability to return to a restorative state.
Your body doesn’t need to understand the dictionary definition of every word.
It responds to the emotional and physiological experience surrounding those words.
That distinction matters.
If you continually speak to yourself with anger, shame, criticism or contempt, what kind of environment are you creating inside?
And if you begin speaking with compassion, patience, kindness and curiosity, what changes?
When you speak fire, your own cells swallow the smoke.
The Spiritual Truth: Your Soul Is Always Listening
In Buddhist wisdom, Right Speech — Sammā Vācā — asks us to become conscious of what we say, why we say it and whether our words create harm or peace.
For me, this goes deeper than simply choosing nicer words.
Your Soul is always listening.
Your cells are always listening.
Your nervous system is always receiving information.
Your body is continuously interacting with your internal and external environment.
So I want you to pause today and ask:
What am I feeding my temple with my words?
Am I telling myself:
I’m broken.
My body is betraying me.
I’ll never get better.
What’s wrong with me?
Or can I become curious enough to say:
I’m listening.
I’m learning.
My body is trying to tell me something.
What is my environment asking my body to respond to?
You don’t have to pretend everything is wonderful.
You don’t have to force positive thinking.
You don’t have to deny pain.
You simply don’t have to make war with yourself while you’re trying to heal.
You cannot shame your body into safety.
You cannot bully yourself into peace.
You cannot fight your way into restoration.
Clean the words.
Calm the terrain.
Create safety.
Allow the body to rest.
Because sometimes the first healing conversation you need to have...
is the one you have with yourself.
💜
And this is why I keep saying:
It’s not mental.
Look at your environment.
Your body has been whispering, talking and now screaming in a cytokine storm by midlife.
Perhaps the question isn’t:
“What’s wrong with me?”
Perhaps the question is:
“What is my body trying to tell me?”
You deserve to feel at home in your own body.
You are home. 💜
